For our last session with the Filby family, we returned to Wascana Park, behind the Royal Saskatchewan Museum. After setting this location, we realized that we were returning to the setting of many previous memories for Adam & Sarah. It was in this same park that we did some of their engagement photos. We also met their daughter, Isla, for the first time, when she was just a wee babe in this very place. So many beautiful memories captured already for this growing family, and the honour to get to do one last session for them.
Isla is the most outgoing and vivacious little girl, and she absolutely cracks us up!! She is a little firecracker, with such a goofball personality, and she is game for pretty much anything at all. Isla is a perfect bundle of four year old energy, bounding from here to there, in a little pink blur. Looking through the photos after the session, we couldn’t help but burst out laughing at the sight of her stalking through the back of one of the photos of Adam & Sarah. She reminded us of a not so sneaky, yet very camera aware yeti, mixed with a little bit of Michigan J. Frog. It brings us to fits of laughter, because it is just so perfectly her!
Oliver, on the other hand, is very shy, and was not so certain about us at the start of the shoot. But one thing we love SO much about photography is having the opportunity to foster an enviornment where people feel safe. Where they can be themselves, open up, be vulnerable, and be received with love. Before long, the shell of uncertain cracked open, and Oliver was smiling and laughing. At one point, he was running so fast that one of his shoes flew off, and Cam stooped down to help him put it back on. The next time it happened, when asked if he wanted help, Oliver told us that he only wanted Cam to help him. After we got home, we found an email from Sarah, saying that once they were in the car, Oliver told them, “Fun, come back ‘gain.” *Cue heart-explosion.*
Along for the ride was Atlas, Adam’s trusty canine sidekick. He’s an adorable ball of fluff, who is so patient with these kiddos, and is soaking up all the joy of every hug. When we attempted to get a few photos without him, Atlas took great offense, pulling the diaper bag he had been affixed to, into the shot so as not to be left out. But don’t worry, he got plenty of snuggles.
Adam & Sarah, we love you guys (and your kids!) so, so much. Watching your family story unfold has been an immense privilege. From us first knowing Sarah as one of “our kids”- a teenager in our youth group, to seeing you as newly engaged and married, to meeting your beautiful Isla and Oliver. This has been such an incredibly special journey for us. We are so thankful for your trust and the opportunity to capture these beautiful family memories.
xoxo
Cam & Courtney
