The Nickel family contacted us a while ago to let us know they were coming to town for a wedding and wanted to get some family photos done on the same day. Which is such a great idea! Everyone was going to be dressed up anyway, might as well document it! If you haven’t heard us say it before, take the time to not only document your family but also be in the photos with them. These memories and moments will become such important milestones that reignite those memories and emotions of this time in your life.

The Nickel family has 2 young boys, Fox and Theo, and even as they arrived they were worried they were late (they were less than 60 seconds late). But when you are from out of town, coming from a wedding, with 2 children under 4, you are allowed to be late! We have 3 kids of our own– we TOTALLY remember the labour-intensive nature of having little kids. There are feedings, naps, bathroom emergencies, lost clothing searches, and so much that can go into arriving anywhere and everywhere. So often our young families can arrive feeling stressed and frustrated from the process of simply arriving!

Please know, we get it. We’ve been there and we understand completely. These sessions are meant to be relaxed and capture who you are as a family, so please don’t fret – we will get images that you are gonna love and it will all work out. Side rant complete!

The Nickel family jumped into photo mode quickly. If they were stressed or frustrated, that didn’t seem to last more than a minute. Tim & Jelea were so much fun and so excited to just spend some time capturing their growing family. Fox and Theo were a little more apprehensive at first as we got to know each other. Fox was accompanied by his special stuffed monkey to keep him company and comfortable.

Fox was obviously ready for these photos, as when we began he was instructing his mom that she needed to smile too! As he warmed up more and more, he began talking to Cam and getting help from him gathering up leaves to make it rain leaves over himself and his family. We love when we are able to break the ice with kids and we begin to see the sparkles in their personalities shine through.

Theo remained fairly stoic and serious throughout, but when he did smile – boy, that smile was to die for! And don’t even get me started on those incredible little wrist rolls – so adorable!!! To also see how Fox interacted with Theo is something to definitely be treasured.

As we hung out together, having races and leaf rain, we also made sure that the Nickel family had photos of each child separately, and of course, you can’t forget about mom & dad! We try to do this with most of our family sessions when possible. Even though you are one family unit, we believe in capturing the relationship between each of the members. Every person is unique and special, and should be documented as such!

And what family session would be complete without ending at a playground. We wrapped up by visiting the Science Centre playground – crossing the block bridge and take a spin in the seated, gravity-based spin seat (I have no idea what the technical name is for it).

Nickel Family, thank you for having fun with us. Even though we had never met before the session, you were a picture of our ideal people to hang out with – real, down to earth, love to have fun, and love your family even more! Thank you for modelling for your kids how to have fun and displaying your love for one another. Those are such important things too! Until next time…
