There is something very special about stepping back into a place that holds a special meaning to a family. This year the Dumont family’s session took us back to the same spot we went with Zack & Kelsey after their 10 year wedding anniversary vow renewal. It is so hard for us to believe that that occurred over SEVEN years ago! It was such a beautiful ceremony, and it was so special that they were able to include their four precious kiddos.
Fast forward to last week where we met with the Dumont family once again across from the Dr. John Archer Library at the University of Regina. We found ourselves surrounded by open skies and big, beautiful trees, preparing to change into their fall leaves of red, orange and gold. This time, we were not only capturing the fantastic couple, but their entire family of six, with four kids who have grown and changed so much since we last had them in front of the cameras!
We love photographing this family because there’s a natural warmth and ease in the way they interact with one another. That same energy that carried them through their vow renewal is still so present, only now it shines even brighter through their children. Each of the kids brought their own spark to the session- different personalities, quirks, different ways of showing their love. It’s a beautiful picture of how Zack & Kelsey’s love continue to ripple outward, and how they have encouraged their kids to each be uniquely themselves.
Kelsey’s parents joined us for the first part of the session as well, which made it even more meaningful! These relationships are irreplaceable and it is such an honour to capture these legacy sessions. As parents ourselves, it is often easier to only capture photos of our kids- where somehow parents and grandparents rarely seem to make it in the frame. Yet they are such a vital part of the overall family story. To freeze these moments of the kids laughing with their grandparents, a daughter leaning into her mom, generations woven together into one image- these are things we know will only grow in value as the years pass.
We will say it over, over AND OVER again: exist in photos. For your sake, but also for your spouse’s sake, your kids’ sake, your parents’ sake, and for legacy’s sake! These moments are precious.
One of our favourite parts of working with families like the Dumonts is giving the kids space to show off who they are. There were moments of pure silliness, bursts of laughter, photo ideas from each kid, and even quiet pauses where each of them seemed to slip into their own little world for a second. We love pulling them aside one by one, capture those individual shots that reflect not just how they look right now, but who they are right now. These photos will someday serve as little time capsules, reminders of the stages that fly by all too quickly.
Of course, family photos are rarely about perfection – they’re about presence. And this session was full of that! Zack and Kelsey moved easily between guiding their crew into a group hug and letting them be goofy while burning some energy. There’s a rhythm that families fall into over the years, and it was beautiful to watch theirs unfold in front of us. You can tell their home is one full of laughter, energy, and love that makes space for each personality to shine bright.
Sessions like this remind us why we love doing what we do. Life is full of little shifts – kids who grow taller in almost the blink of an eye, grandparents who carry wisdom and love into the frame, couples who continue to choose each other year after year. Being able to capture those shifts, to help a family pause and see themselves as they are in that moment, is something we have never grown tired of or taken for granted.
Dumont family, thank you for once again inviting us back into your story. Watching your kids grow, seeing the way you continue to prioritize love and connection, and capturing not just the big milestones but the simple ‘in between’ moments has been such a joy. We hope that when you look back on these images, you see not just what this season of life looked like, but what it felt like. The laughter, the chaos, the tenderness, and above all, the love that ties it all together.
xoxo
