There are some sessions where everything just clicks—the lighting, the location, the couple… it all just works! Our engagement session with Skylar & Michaela was exactly one of those! We ended up with the PERFECT night for a session. We took Skylar & Michaela around barWillow and the Trafalgar Overlook for their engagement session, and honestly, it was magic from the very first frame.
Skylar & Michaela shared with us that they had never had professional photos taken together before, but you would never have guessed it! From the first release of the shutter, they were complete naturals in front of the camera. There was a quiet ease between them, like they fell into each other’s rhythm and were naturally flow posing throughout. It made our job unbelievably easy, not to mention so much fun! We laughed a lot, explored some of our favourite areas around Wascana Marina, and captured so many sweet, genuine moments between them.
It wasn’t just about how they photograph so well on camera, but it was the way they looked at each other. You could see the trust and deep connection that they share, which is really what made this session powerful. There was a twinkle in their eyes and a warmth in their smiles that revealed their shared years of inside jokes and love for one another.
Skylar & Michaela’s story started in high school at Campbell Collegiate, where they went to their prom together as each other’s date to grad. That first official “date” was the beginning of something much bigger than they probably realized at the time. Their second date was a little more casual, Mercury Café for some good food and then games at Ballers.
They’ve been together ever since, and last June they celebrated their fifth anniversary together. On their third anniversary, they celebrate in the most memorable way possible—by getting engaged!!! Michaela had helped pick out her ring, so she knew that it was coming eventually… but she did not know when it was going to happen. Skylar kept his cool as they headed out to Manitou Hot Springs for a little get away to celebrate their anniversary.
Skylar had a plan to propose, but he knew that Michaela’s ring would not be ready yet. He hadn’t planned to have the ring, but they were set to leave that day after work. So, on his lunch break, Skylar found a cheap replacement ring encased in a bath bomb, which he bubbled in the sink of his workplace bathroom to retrieve. Just before the workday ended, he got a call from Victoria Jewellers that the ring was ready! Thinking quickly on his feet, Skylar came up with an excuse as to why they had to head east before making their way up to Manitou.
Skylar & Michaela arrived at Manitou and checked into their room, which had a balcony and an incredible view. That evening, a storm rolled in, and they had a front row seat to an incredible lightning storm that danced around them. But the lightning storm was unique in that it only lit up one half of the horizon, while the other was clear.
Skylar had written out everything he wanted to say, knowing he might be too nervous to remember it all in the moment, but he knew he had to take advantage of this incredible occurrence. While Michaela was admiring the sky on the balcony, he grabbed the ring and his notes. He read his words to Michaela, surrounded by that surreal sky, and asked her to be his wife.
Now, here we are, and their wedding is just around the corner- less than a month away! They’ll be tying the knot at the RCMP chapel in Regina, and we know it’s going to be a beautiful day!
Throughout their engagement session, we witnessed numerous moments of quiet encouragement, whether it was Skylar gently pulling Michaela close, her leaning in with a soft laugh, or the way they instinctively reached for each other between shots. There’s a deep respect and admiration between them, and it shows in every frame.
Skylar & Michaela, thank you so much for allowing us to capture your story. It was a joy to spend time with you both in this special season of your lives. Your laughter, your love, and your deep connection were a privilege to witness and photograph. We’re counting down the days until the wedding, and we know it’s going to be an unforgettable celebration! Here’s to the next big milestone: building a life together that’s full of beautiful, enriching and unexpected moments- and maybe even a few more lightning shows!
xoxo
