It was only a few weeks ago that we shot Skylar & Michaela’s engagement session. But for as brief a time as we have known this couple, it feels like we’ve known them much longer. As their wedding day unfolded, it was an intimate, heartfelt celebration- surrounded by those who had walked with them every step of the way. And we felt honoured to be part of it!
The morning started in two separate locations- Skylar getting ready at the Hotel Saskatchewan and Michaela at her parent’s house. Skylar had spent the night at the hotel alone, and had all morning for the bubbling anticipation and nervousness to begin creeping in. But when his team of people arrived (his parents and grooms-people), Skylar felt a rush of relief. With them they brought a sense of calm, support, and even better- food, and laughter! It is moments like these that remind us of the importance of having your closest people around you through these momentous times in life.
Michaela’s morning, as many brides, might have seemed chaotic from the outside. Many people busy and running around, hair and makeup taking place across the kitchen and dining room, while last minute details including steaming of dresses and veils were all taking place at once. But despite this seeming chaos, Michaela was completely calm. Taking every moment in stride as the minutes to the ceremony ticked closer.
Skylar & Michaela’s ceremony took place inside the historic RCMP Chapel, Regina’s oldest building at 140 years old! For Michaela, who’s dad is an RCMP Member, this location was not only historic and beautiful, but also one that is deeply meaningful.
With Skylar standing at the end of the aisle, Michaela walked through the red doors of the chapel. Both became instantly emotional as their eyes met across the room, a moment neither of them will forget. With each step came a slight adjustment in the emotion, the initial tears moved to a deep appreciation, which moved to ear-to-ear smiles as they got closer to one another. We imagined a slideshow of all those years of memories, laughter, and deep love flashed before them in the culmination of this very moment. This was it. No more nights spent apart. Finally, together, with each other’s forever-best-friend.
This intimate wedding was intentionally put together with their entire wedding party being family members, with siblings and cousins standing by their side. Family is definitely important to both Skylar & Michaela and every aspect of the day echoed just how close-knit this family is. From the ceremony to the reception, everything felt like a celebration of their closest loved ones rather than a big production. And yet, every detail was elegant, thoughtful, intentional and beautiful.
Following the ceremony, we took Skylar & Michaela for some portraits around the chapel area of the RCMP Depot. There was a quiet serenity everywhere we went, adding to the immense beauty of this day shared by two high school sweethearts, now husband and wife. We love to take our time with these photos so that the couple has a chance to breathe, to take in moments from their day, and to let the realization hit them that they are now officially married. It was wonderful!
The reception dinner was held on the grounds of the RCMP as well, catered by one of our favourites, Joe’s European Deli & Catering. At supper, it was announced that this was Joe’s final catering gig before his retirement! Thank you, Joe, for everything. Your food is always fantastic!!
As the evening unfolded, there were plenty of warm hugs after tear-filled speeches. There were deep, boisterous laughs reflecting the fun people were having and some unexpected dances. Many photos snapped of a beautiful cake cutting, and Michaela’s bedazzled jean jacket. And there is no way we could neglect to mention husband and wife wedding Crocs, which is not a staple of most weddings, but so very much Skylar & Michaela that we couldn’t help but get a picture of them!
Both Skylar & Michaela have self-admitted that they are not great dancers, but the way they handled their first dance was superb. It was sweet and meaningful, but then also turned into some very fun (or goofy) dance moves, especially from Skylar to help ease the feeling of pressure with so many eyes on them.
One of those special wedding moments that we always love is the father-daughter and mother-son dances. To watch as these parents embrace their newly married children, and as these children acknowledge the special relationship with their parents is so special. These moments are always so heartfelt, real, and guaranteed to spark tears in our own eyes from behind the camera.
Skylar & Michaela, it was an absolutely privilege to journey with you through this process. To capture your engagement session and your wedding, alongside your family at the historic RCMP chapel. Thank you for trusting us with your memories and inviting us into your precious and heartfelt wedding day.
xoxo
