Returning to “their family tree” near the Wascana Habitat Conservation Area with the Munroe family felt like stepping back into a story we’ve been blessed to tell for years. One that keeps getting richer with every new chapter. Their favourite tree is literally just off of the parking lot around the curve by Douglas Park but this tree has been a staple in many of their sessions. Yet this time there were new voices, new giggles, and even more love to capture.

We’ve known Trevor and Kim for years now, since first shooting their engagement session at this very same spot. We’ve seen them pledge their vows, welcome their first son, Maverick, into the world, and settle into their beautiful home. And now, they have stepped into a new season of life with their sweet little Benson completing their family. There’s something so deeply meaningful about photographing a family over the years and watching their story continue to unfold right in front of our lenses.

This session was full of warmth. The kind that doesn’t just come from the golden autumn light filtering through the trees, but from the love and connection between them all. Maverick, now a very proud big brother, was so eager to show us his little brother, pointing things out and holding on so carefully and lovingly. There’s a sweetness in watching an older sibling grow into their role- protective, curious, and just a little mischievous. The way Maverick would sneak glances at Benson, or giggle when Benson reached for him, or trying to get Benson to laugh himself was the kind of pure sibling love that melts your heart instantly.

Benson, of course, was full of wide-eyed wonder. It’s always amazing how much personality these little ones can have even at such a young age! Benson was so calm and stoic throughout the session, but you can already see the anticipation in his eyes to join his older brother running around. Watching Kim and Trevor take it all in- their boys, their family, their history with this place- was a quiet kind of joy that spoke volumes.

Sadie was, as always, an essential part of the day. She’s been there from the very beginning, from engagement photos to newborn snuggles, and she continues to be such a grounding, loving presence for Kim especially. Mav was more than eager to want to help walk the dog and to have his Sadie next to him. It is obvious that Sadie is such an important part of this family.

The fall colours were just beginning to show, still mostly green with soft yellows and hints of orange framing their little family perfectly. As we stayed near their tree for the session, it was impossible not to think about how much has changed and yet how much has stayed the same. The same laughter. The same deep affection between Trevor and Kim. The same sense of peace that surrounds them whenever they’re together. But now, Benson adds a new dimension to their family and to their love. Filling it out in the most beautiful way.

We love how comfortable these sessions have become. There’s no need for over-posing or perfect timing, just moments unfolding naturally. The way Trevor instinctively reaches for Kim’s hand, or how Kim’s eyes soften when she looks at her boys, are the kinds of moments that we love most. Their love story has been one of quiet strength, joy, and so much laughter.

It was difficult at points to draw Maverick away from the abundance of sticks and rocks that this area provided, as is so often the case with any little boys. He was so excited to share with Cam his findings, his drawings in the dirt, and to make up little games on the spot. We absolutely adore the creativity and simple joys of children, where seemingly nothing can become the most intriguing environment.

We always love pausing the session to focus on the couple – where this all started. Cam gets to carry and care for the kids, while Courtney captures a few quick photos of Trevor & Kim. Both sides of this are so special and heartwarming. To watch as Trevor & Kim connect as the two of them, becoming lost in each other’s eyes and in their quiet moment together. To sit with the boys and be able to make them laugh, engage with them, let them take photos, or even just bribing them with some snacks. These are the moments we cherish, and will absolutely miss.

Munroe family, it’s such an honour to continue documenting your story. From that first walk through the Habitat during your engagement to now, watching you as parents of two amazing boys and seeing Sadie still by your side, it fills our hearts with gratitude. Your family exudes warmth and joy, and being able to capture those moments year after year has truly been a privilege.
