Looking at the forecast leading up to Darcy and Maddie’s wedding day, we expected we might need umbrellas in every photo. Rain was predicted all day. And we mean like real, torrential downpour kind of rain, not the polite, romantic, sprinkly kind of rain. But somehow, the skies withheld long enough to allow for a perfect ceremony at the beautiful Goodsman Farm, and allowed us time for dreamy portraits in the hills of Lumsden. Then, almost as if on a timer, the clouds rolled in and it ABSOLUTELY POURED as we made our way to the Turvey Centre for the reception.
The whole day had a quiet, beautiful joy about it. Everything was calm, content, and so meaningful. Nothing felt rushed or forced. It was the kind of wedding that just fit who the couple is and flowed so naturally and effortlessly. From the moment we met Darcy and Maddie, we could tell how much care they poured into each other and had for the people around them. Their wedding was a beautiful outward reflection of this extravagant love.
Maddie got ready at her sister’s house in Lumsden, surrounded by food, mimosas, and the kind of family teamwork that really makes the dream work. Maddie’s hair was done by Hair By Roma and makeup by Vanessa Fahlman, both enhancing her incredible natural beauty with a look that stayed flawless all day long.
Unlike a lot of weddings we’ve attended, Maddie & Darcy told us that one third of the guests on their invite list were children! They have so many friends and family with little kids, so they could not imagine their special day without them. This also included their six nieces and two nephews who were part of the wedding party. Darcy’s family helped prep lunch for the groomsmen, organize last minute details, and even wrapped Maddie’s wedding gift from him- a team effort that says a lot about the heart of this family!
Both Maddie & Darcy told us that they felt surprisingly calm that morning. After months of planning, they were ready for the day to begin. At the ceremony, a little hiccup in the music made Maddie hesitate for a moment, “Is this my cue to walk?” But as soon as she saw Darcy waiting for her at the other end of the aisle, everything else fell away. The music, the other faces, nothing else had her focus like he did. That moment was the highlight of the day for Darcy, and honestly, it was easy to see why.
The day was coordinated by Michelle with Wish Productions, and the ceremony unfolded beautifully against the backdrop of the hills and trees. Maddie’s bouquet from Rose & Vine Florals added a gorgeous pop of colour, and her gorgeous, delicate Pronovias wedding gown from NWL looked like it had been made just for her. The guys looked sharp in their suits from Colin O’Brian and the bridesmaids added a beautiful touch of colour in their Azazie dresses.
After the ceremony and portraits, we made our way to the Turvey Centre just as the sky let loose with pounding rain. But by the time we arrived at the reception, the rain had already stopped, and the sun was shining in all it’s glory. The reception was filled with love, joy, and SO MUCH energy. As Maddie & Darcy share a love of reading, their seating chart was a bookcase, displaying everyone’s names and table numbers on the spines. It was so perfectly unique to them, and beautiful to see!
Maddie & Darcy’s choreographed first dance may have been a little nerve-wracking (they joked that they were just trying not to fall), but they pulled it off with grace and elegance. The hours they spent in their dance lessons paid off! Speaking of dancing, one of the sweetest things we saw all night was Maddie dancing with the kids surrounding her on the dance floor. Each of them were twirling, laughing, and auntie Maddie was at the centre, being completely present for those kiddos. So extremely heartwarming!
While the guests continued dancing at the reception, we were able to steal Darcy & Maddie away for a few minutes. After the rain, the sky opened up and gave us the most beautiful golden evening light. We were able to get out during sunset for a few bonus photos before Darcy & Maddie returned to their party.
When we asked Maddie & Darcy what advice they’d give other couples planning a wedding, they each offered grounded, heartfelt responses. Maddie said, “Focus on the relationship and what the wedding is truly for.” Darcy added, “Don’t let wedding planning take over your life—keep dating each other.” If that doesn’t perfectly sum up the kind of marriage they’re building, we don’t know what does!
Darcy & Maddie, your wedding day was one we won’t soon forget. We’re so grateful we got to capture it for you- to preserve not just what it looked like, but what it felt like. From the peaceful morning in preparation, the gorgeous ceremony in the valley, to the last sunset photo of the night- we loved it all! It was a day full of real, grounded, lasting love. We are so thankful that we got to witness your joy and the first page of this new chapter in your story.
xoxo
